Types of Coffee Drinks

Types of coffee drinks

Australian Coffee culture receives a lot of praise around the world. What are the key and different coffee types?

Latte

Traditionally:
A Cafe Latte, a.k.a “Latte’ is 220ml (12oZ). It consists of a 30ml shot of espresso, topped with silky steamed milk and a 10-15mm layer of microfoam. It is served in a glass.

Our recommendation: This is for Takeaway (because Cafes are generally aligned in takeaway cup sizes which are 8 or 12 oZ but often vary greatly in terms of dine-in cups. Lattes are often now served in ceramic cups too). 36ml of liquid with our blend, this suffices for two 8 oZ lattes or a double shot/or one 12 oZ.

In the past decade, Coffee filter baskets once contained an average of 7g of coffee during preparation. However, customers are now used to/expect to 10-12g/basket.

87% of Australians ask their Barista to customise their coffee. Unlike in America.

Flat White

Traditionally: A flat white is 200-220ml, sometimes less if speciality coffee. It has a base of a 30ml shot of espresso and integrated, velvety milk microfoam. This should form a thin visible layer on top. A particularly Australian coffee, with varying definitions. It is served in a ceramic cup.

Our recommendation: Same as a Latte but we try to aerate the milk less, thereby creating less microform. Can be served in other cups for aesthetic purposes and otherwise.

Cappuccino

A Cappuccino is 150-220ml. It has a base of a 30ml espresso shot, and is topped with a thick, silky milk layer and microfoam. The silky milk layer and microfoam are of equal amount. It is ultimately topped with a dusting of chocolate powder to finish. It is served in a ceramic cup.

Our recommendation: More microfoam than a Latte with chocolate on top.

Mocha

Traditionally: A cappuccino and hot chocolate hybrid. It is prepared in the same way as a cappuccino. The difference being that the chocolate powder is stirred into the espresso shot prior to the addition of the steamed milk and microfoam. It is usually served in a tall glass.

Our recommendation: The quality of the Mocha is highly dependent on the quality of the chocolate.

Piccolo

A Piccolo (Piccolo Latte meaning small Latte) is a single ristretto shot 15ml -20ml topped with warm silky milk served in a 90ml glass or ceramic cup.

Affogato

A dessert coffee, often 220ml. It is also enjoyed after dinner. It is prepared by placing 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream in a double shot of espresso. It is served in a glass or ceramic cup.

Babycino

Steamed milk with cinnamon or cocoa powder- no coffee whatsoever. Meant to mimic a coffee but for children.
